MODAL SHIFT INITIATIVE | BUILDING THE RAILWAY: FEEDBACK FROM A COALITION OF SHIPPERS ON MODAL SHIFT
The modal shift initiative brought together up to five manufacturers over an 18-month period around a common goal: to accelerate the shift of freight transport from road to rail by pooling volumes. Launched on three European corridors—Italy-France, Spain-France, and Poland-France—the initiative aimed to test, under real-world conditions, the technical, operational, and economic feasibility of a pooled approach.
A unique contribution and insights for the deployment of rail transportation
This POC provided a documented assessment of the actual conditions required to implement rail pooling among shippers on a Europe-wide scale and highlighted the gaps between the initial vision and the market’s current level of maturity. This publication therefore offers several concrete recommendations for stakeholders wishing to undertake a similar initiative.
Contents:
- The Initiative and Its Milestones
- the requirements of a “traditional” transformation project
- factors specific to a cross-company, multi-shipper transformation that depends on the transportation market
- What if we had to do it all over again? Key Lessons Learned
These training sessions are intended for all stakeholders in the ecosystem: shippers, carriers, operators, facilitators, trusted third parties, associations, and institutions
The initiative led by our SUPPLY CHAIN 4 GOOD endowment fund, Argon & Co, and the participating shippers has shown that it is possible to bring competing manufacturers together around a common project, driven by a shared conviction: rail must become a credible option for freight transport in Europe. This conviction remains as strong as ever. The conditions for making this a reality are now better understood.
It is now up to other stakeholders to take up this challenge, build on these lessons, address its limitations, and take it further.
THIS REX IS AN INVITATION TO KEEP GOING.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the teams at LEGRAND, Michelin, Renault, and AiCargo for their unwavering support and commitment throughout this initiative.
