How to build Circular Supply Chains? A look back at a collaborative workshop

On November 22, Lab SupplyChain4Good and our partner Citwell orchestrated a dynamic working day, bringing together over 50 people from a wide range of professional backgrounds. Companies, institutions, academics, local authorities and associations came together to share their expertise and experiences, affirming together that the circular supply chain is essential for a circular economy.

Objectives of the Circular Supply Chain workshops

The key idea guiding the day was the conviction that transforming supply chain models is essential to embracing circularity. Indeed, to keep pace with changing business models, the supply chain must also adopt a circular approach, given its cross-functional nature.

The workshops focused on three key objectives:

Exploring the Circular Supply Chain

Fascinating conferences deepened our understanding of the circular supply chain. Two testimonials highlighted crucial topics: the decarbonization of transport and circularity in textiles. These examples revealed innovative operational processes and strategies, going beyond conventional methods such as reverse logistics and reusable packaging.

Four loops, four lines of thought for concrete, operational results

The day was structured around four fundamental loops:

  1. Intensifying usage: how to maximize the use of existing resources?
  2. Repair and Redistribution: explore opportunities for product repair and redistribution.
  3. Remanufacturing and sustainable production: how to build robust, sober products?
  4. Recycling: how to recover materials, regulatory and technical developments, and traceability?

The workshops produced over 30 concrete, rapidly operational solutions, the result of the commitment and creativity of the participants. The second workshop, focused on resolving the obstacles identified in the morning, was particularly fruitful.

Why and how to use Green Radar Supply Chain?

This publication, at the crossroads of Labs SupplyChain4Good and Digital&Technologies, meets the expectations of companies who no longer wish to choose between competitiveness and sustainability. To complete the scan of the 120 solutions on this radar, we organized a Webinar. Florian Borgobello, manager of Wavestone's Supply Chain practice, and Gilles Verdier, Supply Chain Leader Innovation at Michelin, explained their objectives, their approach and their use of the tool.

Solution radar: what for?

Companies are faced with the real challenge of decarbonizing their supply chains. To achieve this, there are many technical solutions available, but not all of them are equal. To provide a clearer picture, France Supply Chain and Wavestone have identified more than 120 offers and services on the market that meet a direct decarbonization objective.

We have focused on what we call primary and committed solutions. The former are easy to implement and mature, but do not benefit from a strong leverage effect on carbon emission reduction targets. The latter are committed and therefore more complex to deploy, requiring greater investment, but generating much greater results.

Classification of solution types according to impact, maturity, ease of implementation and cost criteria

The editors of the radar emphasized that the solution-oriented approach to decarbonizing the supply chain, which this publication is partly based on, is no substitute for deeper considerations, such as overhauling organizational models. Nonetheless, it remains a prerequisite if decarbonization plans are even to become a reality.

What does this publication contain?

The radar presents companies (start-ups, major groups, pure players) offering marketable solutions and services, as well as inspiring initiatives specific to certain companies. The geographic scope of the analysis is France and Europe.

There are over 120 ideas to choose from, classified into 8 fields of application. Florian Borgobello, leader in the research and construction of the radar, recommends that you take stock of the situation using the tools listed in the "Measuring CO2 emissions" section, then implement your decarbonization plan based on the results gathered, and finally select solutions to meet this prioritized action plan, from the following categories:

Measuring CO2 emissions

Tools for analyzing and tracking greenhouse gas emissions (and other emissions) throughout the supply chain.

Green equipment for logistics

Technical solutions to reduce the environmental impact of intralogistics.

Green vehicles

Vehicle or means of transport (commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles) featuring technology that reduces the carbon footprint of a journey.

Sharing platform

Technology or service offering greater mutualization in the supply chain (last-mile delivery, reduction in empty transport, etc.).

Packaging

Technical solutions to reduce the environmental impact of packaging (excluding primary packaging).

Reverse logistics

Services or systems to implement and operate a circular flow logic (return flow management, etc.).

Building energy efficiency

Tools for monitoring and optimizing the energy consumption of logistics buildings to reduce their environmental impact.

Other

Solutions which are not included in the previous categories, but which offer significant advantages from a Green Supply Chain perspective.

He also explains that at Michelin, working in an ecosystem is seen as a strength. CO2 measurement in freight transport: why and how to measure?

This webinar is the result of exchanges conducted over the last 12 months within the SupplyChain4Good Lab between shippers and freight forwarders. The latest IPCC report urges us to act even faster, to deploy solutions to measure and reduce CO2 emissions .

QUESTIONS / ANSWERS from participants :
  • Why doesn't Renault include the river mode in its modal shift objective? Inland waterways have a long history of transporting vehicles and CKDs, and offer large transport capacities on large-gauge routes (Seine, Rhône, northern and eastern network).

    For the distribution of vehicles this was studied, but we were confronted with several difficulties: The first one, the barges for the transport of vehicles are specific and there are not, currently in France, barges available and in state. The second difficulty concerns the economic equation vs. CO2 gain, which was not satisfactory because we do not have balanced flows. For parts, after-sales logistics is beginning to study river transport to deliver to cities, but for the moment it is a study phase.
  • Who are the accredited bodies that can certify "CO2 accounting"?

    Statutory auditors are currently responsible for certifying extra-financial performance declarations (EPD) and in the future will be responsible for certifying CSRD reporting - these declarations include greenhouse gas emission indicators. In addition to the annual report, there are also lists of accredited verifiers for more specific product or service publications; for example, for product life cycle emissions assessments, the EPD program qualifies a list of independent verifiers that can be accessed at this link: LIST: Independent Verifiers | EPD International (environdec.com

  • For rail freight, emissions in France are much lower than those presented, in WTW: less than 2 g CO2 / ton.km for Fret SNCF. Can you please specify this? Shippers, carriers or freight forwarders can ask the rail operators.

    For rail freight, the energy mix has an impact on the level of emissions: diesel or electric traction, as well as the source of electricity production (coal-fired, nuclear, green...) - hence the added value of using national emission factors. For example, the emission factor for a 1,000-ton electric train (40% utilization rate) will be 2.5gCO2/t.km in France, but will reach 16.5gCO2/t.km in Germany, or 33.9gCO2/t.km in South Africa. (page 11) 

  • Have you done any modeling on BtoC deliveries which are less heavy but more frequent?

    The study conducted focused on BtoB deliveries. We have considered a scenario of 100 tons of goods. (page 13) 

  • If individually these measures reduce emissions, don't they risk increasing them by rebound effect? The decrease in consumption leads to cheaper energy and encourages increased use, or even frees up new use cases

    Yes, it is possible, but we can hope that regulatory incentives, combined with pressure from the end customer to decarbonize, will limit this rebound effect. 

  • In the tonnage, do you take into account the weight of the trailer (for road) or the weight of the container (for sea)?

    The weight of the vehicle is taken into account in the emissions, but not the tonnage of the goods. (page 13) 

  • 87% reduction by train, do we take into account the pre- and post-transportation by truck?

    For this scenario (page 13) we have taken a station-to-station journey (Paris to Hamburg), not including the pre and post but which, in relation to the total distance, remains negligible (in the scenario retained from Paris to Hamburg). 

  • Is the truck fill rate really taken into account in the calculation of the emission factor?

    In this case, yes, insofar as this exercise involves allocating 100t of goods to a number of vehicles that will vary according to the fill rate. You can refer to the scenario presented on page 13. 

  • Is rail the most efficient? To what extent? What are the CO2 emissions per ton transported?

    Yes, we are talking about CO2/t.km. For the order of magnitude you can refer to page 11 which presents the estimates of GLEC Framework. 

  • Are there priority levers?

    All the levers are important and can be combined. Modal shift remains the priority lever when possible. You can refer to page 12 for an exhaustive list of reduction levers (load optimization, fuel mix, etc.).
