Internship- Optimization of e-commerce order preparation

Operational research applied to the preparation of orders in an e-commerce environment under strong time constraints

Context of the course
E-commerce is growing rapidly, driven by the COVID crisis. Standard solutions for stock management and order preparation exist and form the core of the current
WMS today. Management by wave, picking and distribution.
Nevertheless, there are cases where this organization finds its limits and no longer allows progress, especially in terms of preparation time
In a few figures :
- 3 million orders per year
- 5 million items in stock
- 300,000 article references (SKU)
- 580,000 stock locations organized in 4 levels and 50 aisles per level
However, the constraints of e-commerce are constantly increasing, particularly in terms of preparation time: customers are increasingly demanding.
The current organizations and algorithms have more and more difficulty in taking into account all the constraints. We believe that there is a lack of artificial intelligence
In detail:
There is an average of 15,000 orders in the backlog, half of which are in preparation.
Each order has a requested delivery date as well as a cut-off date/time which corresponds to the
Each order has a requested delivery date and a cut-off date/time which corresponds to the maximum date the order must be prepared to meet the requested delivery date.
These orders are made up of items that can be picked up from different locations in the inventory.
The length of the pick path is a key element of optimization. To minimize it:
- One operator will pick up items for several orders at the same time
- Different operators will pick up items for the same order when these items are too far apart
On the other hand, the collected items will have to be broken down to group the whole order in the same support for packing and shipping.
The problem is therefore to identify the right orders to group together that will allow the cut-off date to be respected and that will minimize the movements of the pick-up operators, in
in an environment where 600 new orders are received every hour.

Objective of the course
After a first step of familiarization with the current order preparation processes, the internship will aim at identifying the major areas of improvement through the use of
artificial intelligence.
In detail:
- Identify the most suitable operational search algorithms (traveller, genetic algorithm)
- Simulate these algorithms on real days (programming, simulation)
- Detail the business processes that will allow the organization of the picking of items in the field, their breakdown by order in order to pack and ship them at the desired date.
- Study the possible interfaces with the computer systems and write the functional specifications
Required skills:
- Operational research, artificial intelligence (genetic algo, traveller...)
- VBA programming or other
- Excel, Access, Powerpoint

Envisaged remuneration:
1 500€ net per month

Duration: 4-6 months
